Our National Executive Director visits us
In October 2002 we had the honour of having our National Executive Director
of the South African Federation for Mental Health, Mr Solly Mokgata, visit
Cape Mental Health and some of our projects.
After visiting Erika Special Care Centre in Mitchell's Plain, Mr Mokgata wrote
the following message in their visitors' book:
"The work you do is unsurpassed. I encourage you to continue improving
in the work you do and please keep the enthusiasm. People like you are a great
inspiration to the Mental Health Movement. Regards, Solly Mokgata"
Madiba Magic

In November 2002 Imizamo
Yethu (our special care centre in Khayelitsha) enjoyed a visit from Mr Nelson
Mandela. His words of encouragement meant a great deal to our care-workers,
and his warmth and kindness worked their magic with our children who have
severe/profound intellectual disabilities. Mr Mandela highlighted the valuable
contribution that the private sector makes to the disability field - a sentiment
that is certainly shared by Cape Mental Health Society.
Tweede Nuwe Jaar (Second New Year)
Fountain House (SA) held a very successful dinner dance fundraiser
in August 2002. The theme was Tweede Nuwe Jaar (2nd New Year) with a distinct
District Six flavour. 260 guests attended, hosted by the patron of Fountain
House, Peter Gird. We were also extremely proud of the murals and other décor
painted by our members.
The auction was a huge success, and funds raised benefit the Fountain House
programme, which provides social and vocational rehabilitation for adults
with mental illness.
